CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Big Saturday - Matches
* * *
The morning went by quickly, and as the courts emptied the stands filled with spectators. Temporary bleachers had been placed on court three so that the overflow of spectators that couldnât sit on the deck or porch of the clubhouse could sit on the other side of the courts and have just as good a view as those seated by the clubhouse. The porch, as always, was lined with rocking chairs and all the chairs on the deck were placed along its edge so that the effect was that of a small, intimate stadium surrounding courts one and two.
Marty and Dalton were to play Bert and Jesse on court two, while Russ and Phil played on court one. I also learned that Tom would play Philâs father on court eight which backed up to court one and was separated only by a tall fence. They did this so that Tom and Philâs father, who was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Air Force, could keep one eye on Russ and Philâs match as they played.
Tom called his match with Phillipâ father, the Old-Folks-Match, even though he was only thirty-three and Colonel Culler was thirty-nine.
I noticed some men, who, judging by their clothes, had to be college coaches, walking through the clubhouse on their way out to the deck. I asked Coach about them and he said he had invited them. They were all there trying to recruit Phil and Russ. Marty and Dalton had already committed to playing for South Carolina and Jesse and Bert had committed to Georgia. The coaches all dressed the same, each wearing their school colors on their shorts and shirts, with some wearing a university baseball cap.
There were more than ten of them there; three had traveled from the west coast and one from Texas. The rest were from schools in the southeast. I saw logos for universities in California, Georgia, South Carolina, and others, on their shirts or hats. They all knew each other, and they were growing themselves a loud conversation on the deck of the clubhouse.
It was a few minutes after ten and I was on the screen-porch putting out a table for the drinks that went along with all the food on another table that had been brought in by club members for the outdoor lunch that was to be eaten by everyone while the matches were played.
Tom and Russ were on court one warming up for their matches. Dalton and Marty had just left court two after having finished their own warm-up.
There was a noticeable excitement to the event and I was glad to be a part of it. I was also looking forward to going the beach after the matches. It was a tradition on Big Saturday for everyone to go to the beach for the afternoon after the matches were completed. I loved the beach and I couldnât wait.
I saw Tamera walk around the side of the clubhouse and along the path between the clubhouse and court one.
